PHILIP TRUSTTUM SHOWROOM

Picture

As the only Gallery in the country totally committed to maintaining a rich and regularly changing selection of Trusttum's works for viewing and purchase, we offer the fullest knowledge, support and advice on his work.

Bill Milbank's association with Philip Trusttum began in 1976 - at the Sarjeant Gallery, Whanganui when he installed an exhibition of Trusttum's large 1974 expressionist paintings of construction cranes over Christchurch.  In 1980 as Director he curated a major touring exhibition that surveyed Trusttum's painting from 1960 to 1980.  Up until Milbank left the Sarjeant in 2006 the gallery regularly bought and exhibited Trusttum's work and with the artist's support built up the most comprehensive public gallery collection of his work.

In early 2007 Bill established the WHMilbank Gallery and his commitment to showing work by Trusttum on a regular basis strengthened.  The gallery is now housed in Whanganui's old Druid's Hall and Bill has dedicated the large main hall as a wonderful, spacious stock Showroom for the permanent display of paintings and drawings by Trusttum.

His large rich canvases grace high cream walls forming a regularly changing frieze above the brown vertical panelling. At this lower level smaller stock works by Trusttum and other local and national artists are gathered providing visitors a treasure trove experience.

With more than 300 canvases and over 5,000 drawings by Trusttum in stock and direct access to all the works held by the artist, a visit to WHMilbank Gallery is a rewarding experience.  Milbank has over the years built up a major visual archive of Trusttum's work and is currently working on a major publication on the artist and his work.
