James Lawson STEWART (1829 – 1911)
The Flemish Cottages, Dedham ESSEX

Picture
Water colour on paper  350mm x 250mm
$950 or near offer

Stewart was an architect and artist keenly interested in accurately recording the setting of the variety of historic buildings in England and Europe.  This is a typical mid scale example of his better work and it is in very good condition having been protected from strong light for most of its life.

The artist’s distinctive monogram is clearly evident in the bottom right corner and the title and artist’s signature is on the paper under the matt board. Over the past decade works of similar caliber have sold at auction in the UK from between $750 and $1500.

Henry Thomas Garratt 1875 -1953
WAIKATO RIVER NEAR MERCER

Picture
Waikato River at Mercer 650x450mm in oak frame
$750.00 or near offer

Garratt was an Auckland landscape painter and signwriter.
He appearsto have used many pseudonyms including de Ritz A, Anthony A de Ritz, G de R itz, de Ritz Junior, Paul Wren, Maxwell, Edwards, and possibly Mayclair and J A Bond.

This painting is very typical of his style (irrespective of pseudonym) and amongst the more interesting examples of the many works I have seen by this prolific artist.  While not attacting the same market interest as his contempories such as Kirkwood, Pruden, or Howorth,  there is a growing level of attention being paid to his work, particularly by those seeking a more outsider view of the New Zealand landscape and his curious and as yet unfathomable raft of speudonyms. The owner is seeking a modest sum for the unconserved work which has been infamily hands in raetihi for many years.

Otto PAREROULTJA (1914-1973)

Picture

Untitled watercolour on paper
Original frame  - frame size  240mm x200mm

Otto and his Brother Edwin were of the Aranta  Tribe and belonged to
thegroup of aboriginal painters called the Hermansberg painters of
which Albert  Namatjira is the best known.

This small work is a typical high quality work by Otto and is originally framed and in good condition.
Works of this scale and slightly larger fetch between $A 2,000 - $A4000 depending on image and demand of the day.   Larger and works have fetched upward of $A50,000

The owner will part with it for $NZ3,000 or near offer - all enquiries welcomed.

Amos LANGDOWN (1930 -2006)
THE TOAST  1971

Picture
Lithograph and mixed media  - 200mm x 170mm
$250 or near offer

Langdown was a South African artist who mainly worked in a faux-naïve modernist style and was best known for his figurative studies of small groups and individuals – frequently from poor communities.

This work is from the estate of Joan Grehan and was probably acquired
by the artist during her time living in Africa  - Joan may well have known and exhibited with Langdown.

It is a very engaging work and knowing Joan’s pleasure in celebratory
occasions one can clearly see why she was drawn to it.
